Facebook Fan Page Privacy Settings Q&A

[UPDATE] Yes, there is a way to show and hide content based on if someone has “liked” your facebook fan page. This is not a membership level security fix. For example someone can “Like” your page to get access to the content and then unlike your page. Please keep that in mind. below I have included a basic code snippet to show and hide content based on if someone has liked your facebook page. In this case I’m showing a coupon code if you like the page:

Todays video will answer the following question, submitted by a viewer.

Great Video. Could you make a video on how to make content available to ONLY Fan members. So say you had a picture, only Fan members could see it.
John

John, great Question and the answer is no, not on a Fan Page. You can limit this on your personal page but not your Businesses or Fan Page.

  1. I am trying to find out if i create a business page on facebook under my same username (email address) will everyone be able to see it or just my friends that i have set up on my personal page. When i go to the privacy settings it is showing me the settings for my account and not my business page just by itself. I want my business page to be able to be seen by everyone (even people i'm not “friends” with on facebook). But, i don't want to have to set up an entire new facebook account just to do this. Can you help?

  2. Jamie, Thanks for your question. Yes, you can create your facebook business page using your personal account (and should) and still have it accessible to the whole facebook community. In fact opening two personal accounts for the same person on facebook is against their TOS and could get you banned.

Steps to Create a Fan Page:
    1. Login to your personal account
    2. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and click the “Advertising” link
    3. Top of the page click the “Pages” link
    4. Click the Green “Create Page” button

If you need more help just let me know.

    Hope that helps.

    • I have created a facebook for the company that I work for, using my personal account. However the company page does not appear to be found by everyone when the search via google or via facebook…I can not find where to amend the settings for this. can someone please help? Thanks

  5. I work for an orthodontist and we post photos of the children (with the parents permission of course.) We would REALLY like to be able to restrict viewing those photos to the fans only. No way?

  6. Rebecca,

Sorry, there is no way to restrict access of photos on Facebook Business pages. At lest not yet. I think in time this may become a future of business pages.

    Josh

  7. Actually, you can restrict content to only fans, but it involves inserting four tags within your Static FBML app.

Just google “facebook fan only content” and quite a few articles will show up, all have the tags you need and most will have pretty good how-to tutorials, too.

  8. Thanks for the Tip!!! I did a little Google research as suggested and I'm in the process of testing the functionality. I'll post a video once I'm done. Thanks again for the info.

  9. The "Guest" Returns... says:

    Josh, that would be awesome!

As I'm sure you noticed, there are no video tutorials out there (some don't even have pics) and I sure could have used one when I was figuring this out.

  10. Foolish01 says:

Someone is trying to post one of my videos on my facebook fan page onto his personal website but it tells him that the video has been removed or has privacy protection. How can I make it so that he can put the video onto his page?

  11. This wouldn't help much- Since anyone could become a fan at any time, they are essentially out in the open no matter what.

  12. I was able to get this working. I hope to do a video tutorial on this soon. I'll post once it's completed.

  13. You are correct. Showing content based on “Likes” is not a good way to protect content on facebook. Until facebook ads more admin features to fan pages, this is the best we can do…

  14. Is the video hosted on facebook or Youtube? In either case I'm sure this is a privacy setting issue you can resolve by login in and changing the privacy rules for that video. If you give me more details, I can search for a more specific answer.

  16. I am an admin on a company facebook page.  We ‘like’ certain pages but we do not want people who ‘like’ our page to see who we like.  How do I hide the pages that I ‘like’?

  17. Yes, Privacy Settings is really necessary in facebook. Thanks for the wonderful post on this!

  18. hej.

I have a question. I opened a business page on FB, but i don’t want to ppl see my page, unless they log in to FB.
I would like to ppl first log in, so they can like my page and see the content, whats on my page.
If i’m not log in to FB, and i copy to google my page, i can easily see the page content, albums, pics etc.
Thats what i want to change!

    is that possible?

I was searching on my settings that possibility but i could not find it.
Then i was clicking on some of my albums on FB page, and i saw the icon that shows that album is public, but there isnt any option to change that status ‘public’.

    Any help,please?
